Child's Brown Aesthetic Transferware Waste Bowl
LITTLE GIRL WITH BIG DOG

This child size doll's transferware waste bowl or slop pot dates to circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service or dollhouse teaset, the waste bowl
was the piece that held the tea dregs, and it
is the piece that is nearly always missing from these early tea sets. The deep round bowl stands about 2-3/
8 inches
tall and measures about 4-
1/2
across the top rim.
The decoration is transfer printed in
earthy sepia brown
. The piece depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, tanding with her arms around a huge dog. Little May is wearing a big hat and the dog appears to be smiling. This endearing scene, framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies.  It has a decorative border trim in side the rim with three groups of fruit.
It is marked ‘Staffordshire England’, a mark registered by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little Mae with Dog" or "Girl with Big Dog".
The piece is in very good condition with no chips cracks or repairs.
The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect these dishes...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there are always little bumps and dips that were glazed over in the factory,
stilt mark on the foot,
and runny smeary glaze. The primitive and hasty style adds to the folksy charm of 19th century childrens' pottery and
typical of 19th century childrens' wares. Offered as is. A great example of naive and whimsical early wares!
